Description

Born in 1972 in the city of Faridabad of Haryana, Nidhi Agarwal studied at the College of Art, Delhi. Born in a conservative Agrawal family, Nidhi confesses that she hadn’t seen an art exhibition until she was 17. But when her teacher saw her passion for painting, she was encouraged to take up art and her parents supported this endeavor.

The artist works in a hybrid style that encompasses abstraction, figuration and primitivism. Her work exudes rebelliousness and seems to question the norms and assumptions of the society. Her very unique way of use of colors create sporadic, powerful visual communications, which in reality are ironic, somewhat surreal in shapes, forms and bold. Without painting in the realist mode, the artist manages to critically comment on the socio-cultural realities of our existing society. Even though her style is contemporary yet the subject matter is Indian to the core.

Her sensitivities colour and the use of it with confidence in her brush strokes and thick application of paints and other materials build up her impasto technique and producing works which demand a revisited attention. Nidhi has been a recipient of several awards including the Yuva Mahotsava and the Sahitya Kala Parishad awards, the AIFACS award, the ITDC award as well as the Ravi Jain annual scholarship. She has held several exhibitions of her work in India, Germany and USA.
