Shyamal Dutta Ray (1934 - 2005)
Shyamal Dutta Ray began his career in the 1950s, first working in oil and later switching to watercolour on medical advice. Dutta Ray’s paintings speak of the juvenile ill-health and experience of Bengal famine. His paintings are also laden with satire and wit and are often subtly political. His works respond to reality with often a willful distortion and communicate his preoccupation with the human condition.
