Nandalal Bose (1882 - 1966)

Nandalal Bose was born in 1882 in Kharagpur in British India. Although he did not receive any formal art education, he learnt painting forms like still life, model painting etc. from his cousin. Nandalal was immensely influenced by Abanindranath Tagore, one of his contemporaries. His style consisted of several European techniques while projecting those styles with Indian subjects. Nandalal juxtaposed his brilliant techniques in simple subjects. Bose is honoured with several prestigious awards like Padma Vibhushan, Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi, Deshikottama, an Honorary D.Litt. by the University of Calcutta; Silver Jubilee Medal by the Academy of Fine Arts and the Tagore Birth Centenary Medal by the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He exhibited in Indian Society of Oriental Art and showcased two of his works namely, ‘Shiva’ and ‘Sati’. Today, his paintings are in the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Nandalal’s works are exhibited in both national and international exhibitions. Some of them include Crystal Palace of England; Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français at Grand Palais in Paris, The Netherlands and Imperial Institute of England, Indian School of Oriental Art, American Federation of Art, Athénée Gallery of Geneva, Centenary Retrospective Exhibition, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and many more. In 1976, his name was included among India’s Nine treasure Artists of national importance. Nandalal passed away in 1966.
