Description

Achuthan Kudallur was born in 1945 in Kerala. He was a self-taught artist with a degree in Civil Engineering. Art happened accidentally to Achuthan. He started writing for Malayalam periodicals, which did not excite him for long. Upon his arrival in Chennai, he initially started drawing as a support to his writing career. He began with figurative drawings in the beginning. He studied painting in the Government College of Art in Chennai and was also a part of the Madras Art Club. While he was in search of a better medium for self-expression, he switched to painting abstracts as he believed abstracts revealed his true understanding of emotions. Once he started using colour, he got more and more absorbed into it. As he progressed in abstract art his style received greater recognition here in India as well as abroad. During the years of 1990-1992, he took part in group exhibitions in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and France. In 1989, he participated in a group show in India and Czechoslovakia. He had won the Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi Award and later won the National Academy Award in New Delhi. His works started being featured in international auctions like Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Achuthan Kudallur passed away on 18th of July 2022, leaving behind a legacy of art and painting.
