Description

Rabin Mondal, a senior contemporary artist, was born in 1929 in Kolkata. He graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Vidaysagar Art School. Rabin admired Jamini Roy’s folk style and Rabindranath Tagore’s dark paintings and drawings. His works were first exhibited in 1955, as a part of a group exhibition along with the other leading artists of Bengal School. His first solo exhibition was held in 1961 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. His subjects were mainly figurative and he used in bold strokes to create tableaux, whose themes are universal. Rabin Mandal was quite active with the avantgarde artist’s organizations in the city. He was a Lalit Kala Akademi member from 1979-1982 which also published a book of his drawings. Rabin Mandal passed away on 2nd July 2019
