Year-(i-iii) 1983

Nudes constitute the main part of Souza’s work beginning right from his student days. His incomparable mastery of the female form made him distinctive among his contemporaries. He had grown into an obsessive and compulsive painter of the female nudes this phenomenon can now be interpreted in Freudian as well as Feminist analyses. It was observed that among the 20th century artists, painting of nudes and erotic imagery became an important weapon in the battle for modernism. The shock value of the work was an apt strategy to assert individuality and freedom, Souza had already projected his revolt by portraying the nude in stark frontal view
