Sailoz Mookherjea was born in 1907 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was one of the eminent master modern painters of India. He received Diploma in Fine Arts from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata in 1932 and became a teacher at Delhi Polytechnic and also served as an Art Director at Imperial Tobacco company before finally moving to Paris in 1937. During his stay in Paris, he was hugely inspired by Matisee Odalisques and there was a transformation in his work as well. Although, his main influence lay with the folk art of India and the Basohli Miniatures. In 1979, the Archaeological Survey of India declared him as one of the ‘Nine Masters’ of Indian art. Sailoz’s works were exhibited both nationally and internationally at the UNESCO World Art Heritage Exhibition in Paris in 1946. Apart from this, his works are a part of several important collections of Indian art, including those of the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and the Jehangir Nicholson Gallery, Mumbai. He passed away in 1960.
