Jayasri Burman

Jayasri Burman, a well-known Indian Contemporary artist, was born in the year 1960 in Calcutta- now known as Kolkata. She pursued her art studies from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and a Masters in Arts in Painting. She also studied printmaking under Monsieur Ceizerzi in Paris. Jayasri works primarily with watercolor, along with pen and ink and other mixed mediums her works advocate mythical miniature and the modern using strong hues and bold themes – illusionary hybrid animals with human heads and feminine figures. Her work has been exhibited in various public and private collections in India, and abroad.

Her works are distinctive of her style and the spontaneous expression is the reflection of her state of mind put beautifully on the canvases. She belongs to an extended family of eminent artists: her husband, Paresh Maity; uncle Sakti Burman and her cousin, Maya Burman.

In 2005, she was instrumental in putting together an exhibition called "The Family" showcasing works of all these artists. She works and lives with her husband Paresh Maity in New Delhi.
