Description

Meera Mukherjee born in 1923 in Kolkata, she studied at the Indian School of Orinetal Art at the age of 14. She secured a diploma in painting, graphics and sculpture from the Delhi Polytechnic in 1947. She travelled to Germany to study painting at the Hochschule for Bildende Kuenste in Munich in the year 1953. However, after a single term, she changed over to sculpture, which later became her calling and facilitated her to win accolades globally.

Meera Mukherjee was highly influenced by the traditional Dhokra sculptures of the Bastar region in Chhatisgarh. She experimented on her own process for bronze casting after gaining knowledge on the Dhokra or lost wax method. Her method essentially first required sculpting the works in wax, in order to preserve the tactile nature of the material, then built it up and added surface decorations using wax strips and rolls. Despite the hardness of the bronze, its finesses in her works appeared delicate, organic and malleable, imbuing the work with a unique kind of a rhythm.

In her sculptures, Meera ingeniously intertwines scenes from the life of a common man with elements of Bengali calligraphy, nature, music and dance. Many of the sculptures are based on day to day chores, her subject matter included women stitching, weavers, fishermen, laborers and other workers. Each of her artwork touched a spiritual plane through and through them she celebrates the spirit of humanism. Reaching beyond the mundane and embracing the magical and the sublime.

She received the Press Award for the Master Craftsman in 1968, from the President of India and the Abanindranath Award from the West Bengal government in 1981. And the prestigious Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1992. Meera Mukherjee passed away in 1998.
