Description

Latika Katt is one of the finest Indian sculptors who specializes in stone carving, metal casting and bronze sculpting. Noticeably one sees the traditional and the experimental terrains in her works and as a rare women sculptor, she has created a distinct identity in this field amongst the male bastion of art. Born in 1948, she admits her schooling at the Doon School which was an all boys school in Dehradun gave her the confidence and courage to stand out stronger in her later years. Having graduated with a First Class in Bachelor's in Fine Art from Baroda College of Art in the year 1971.

Interestingly her talent was spotted by Indira Gandhi during an art exhibition, and she later encouraged her to take up sculpting as a profession.

She taught at Jamia Millia Islamia and Banaras Hindu University for many years starting 1981 and headed the Department of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia. Living in Banaras revealed the cycle of life and death to her more strongly. The ghats “a universe in itself” do find a reference in her sculptural journey but also indicate growth and decay. As a Botanist, to her; an insect's life fascinates her more than a human life, termites and beehives have become part of her subjects. Her constant muse is the all-pervading nature that emerges in her creative processes with a vibrant and organic force, few can emulate. Banana plantations, cabbage fields of China, snowflakes of Canada often trigger her creative process.

She lives and works from Delhi and Varanasi.
