Description

Anupam Sud is considered one of the finest printmakers amongst the new generation of artists in India. Born in 1944 at Hoshiarpur in Punjab, She studied at the College of Art, New Delhi in 1967 and studied print-making at the Slade School, London, under a British Council scholarship in 1971-72.

The artist works mainly with intaglio prints; She combines her knowledge of different intaglio processes with lithography and screen-printing. Her zinc plate pulsates with life in them suggesting contours of a sculpture, eventually hinting at the warmth of oils.

On the whole a controlled energy seems to significantly distinguish her work. Her works encapsulate the universal human conditions, the predicaments, the angst, and the agonies of being human. Also, her concerns are embedded in a compelling feminist vocabulary. Her subjects are often introspective and fatalistic - existing in a world that is falling apart.

The artist's works were influenced from varied fields that helped her enhance her art further. Having grown up under the guidance of Somnath Hore in Delhi, as an artist she would closely relate to his works. She was also one of the founding members of the Group 8 that was formed in 1968. Her works have been part of several National and International exhibitions and she has conducted printmaking workshops in Canada and Japan.

Anupam Sud, lives and works in New Delhi.
