A. A. Almelkar was born in Solapur, Maharashtra in 1920. After receiving a conventional education in a local school, he joined the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. In his early career he branched out and later evolved his own style. The subjects of his artworks are inspired from ordinary folk, fishermen and tribal
people. Almelkar presented the tribal people against the background of simple decorative motifs. He was the Principal of a private art institute called ‘Nutan Kala Mandir’ in Bangalore. Later, he joined as a lecturer at the Sir J.J. School of Art in 1968. His shows won mentions in Malaysia and in other Asian capitals too. Almelkar passed away in December 1982 at the age of 62.
