Shyamal Mukherjee is a contemporary artist who reinterprets the Bengal School's figurative tradition through a modern idiom. He completed his BFA at Santiniketan in 1987 and an MFA from Rabindra Bharati University in 1989. Inspired by travel, Mukherjee often paints people in pairs or groups, highlighting shared human behaviors despite physical differences. His figures wear the vibrant, gaudy attire of street performers, yet their cartoon-like features and gazing eyes convey deep irony and pathos. Methodologically, he is recognized for his distinctive technique of reverse oil or acrylic painting on transparent acrylic sheets, bringing a luminous depth to his narratives.
