Somnath Singh earned his BFA (2001) and MFA (2004) from the College of Art, New Delhi, debuting his first solo exhibition at Dhoomimal Gallery in 2013. Working in a semi-abstract style, Singh’s art poignantly captures the emptiness and isolation of modern urban life. Inspired by the relentless cycle of city living—noise, architecture, and transactional relationships—he utilizes partly obscured, faceless human figures to evoke a profound sense of contemporary melancholy. By pairing deep, striking colors against muted backgrounds, Singh heightens the emotional pathos of his subjects. His evocative compositions offer a cathartic experience, allowing city dwellers to deeply empathize with the shared existential anxieties of metropolitan existence.
